Rod McRae — painter

Venetianesque

After arriving in Australia in September 1982, we stayed a short while in Sydney before travelling north to the Nimbin region, where we lived for a year. There, I finally decided to give up medicine and concentrate on painting, and when I started painting again, it was Venice that was still fermenting in my imagination. I was trying to recreate the experience I had felt in the churches of Venice, so I painted, from my imagination, huge baroque scenes and sky-scapes.

I had never painted much figurative work before, and I found the tasks daunting.

In 1984 we moved to Melbourne, and I arranged a show with Bruce Pollard at Pinacotheca Gallery in Richmond for April 1985. This was my first show in Australia.
