GridsAround 1976 I was painting abstract expressionist work in the classic tradition of St Martins School of Art, London, where I was studying. I found that I could create a significant tension by laying a rough grid over the undefined space of a previously painted expressionist work. I became aware that in crossing the boundaries between the two 'layers', the eye and brain had to work to make sense of the changing environment, thus creating meaning. It was hard to define the meaning exactly but it was clear that an event of this kind was triggered. |
